The short answer
What can I do instead of lat pulldowns without a machine?
Use pull-ups or assisted pull-ups when a proper bar is available. A safely anchored band pulldown works for lighter, higher-repetition training. A dumbbell pullover can cover shoulder extension when neither cable nor bar exists, but it changes the elbow and trunk demands.
What to preserve
Start with why the pulldown is present: vertical-pull strength, muscle-building volume, or a stepping stone toward pull-ups.
- A vertical or shoulder-extension pulling action
- A difficulty that reaches the planned effort in a sensible range
- A controlled shoulder position without swinging or forced range
Make the change in this order
- Use pull-ups for a stronger bodyweight optionAssistance can bring the repetitions into range. The exercise demands more body control and may be too difficult for the original volume target.
- Use bands for adjustable light workChange band tension or kneeling distance, but only from a rated anchor that cannot release toward you.
- Use pullovers when no anchor existsA pullover keeps loaded shoulder extension. It does not train the full elbow-flexion and vertical-pull pattern of a pulldown.
- Match the dose to the new exerciseDo not force the old pulldown weight or repetition target onto a bodyweight movement with a different difficulty curve.
Where this answer changes
- Unassisted pull-ups are not a useful volume substitute if only one or two poor repetitions are possible.
- A band setup is only as safe as its anchor and the condition of the band.
- Exact pulldown progress should resume on the machine rather than being inferred from another movement.

How Aion handles this decision
Aion keeps the vertical-pull role and adjusts assistance, repetitions, and exercise history to fit the replacement instead of copying the machine prescription.
