The short answer
What should I do when every squat rack is taken?
Do the session. Keep a knee dominant squat pattern and change the tool. A goblet squat, front squat from the floor if you can clean it safely, split squat, or a stable leg press all keep the job of the slot. Raise the repetitions if the new tool is lighter. Do not wait twenty minutes for a rack unless this is a test or a competition lift.
What to preserve
The slot is there to load the squat pattern. The bar and the rack are one way to do that, not the only way.
- A controlled squat or split squat through a useful range
- Enough effort that the legs, not the wait for a rack, do the work
- The rest of the week, which does not need a rewrite because today changed tools
Make the change in this order
- Name the job of the slotA general strength or muscle day needs a hard squat pattern. A back squat practice day is the one case where waiting or moving the lift is the better call.
- Take the closest tool you can loadA heavy goblet squat is first. A front squat you can set up without a rack is next. A loaded split squat or a stable leg press keep the work when the dumbbell is too light.
- Match effort, not the old numberIf four sets of six on the back squat become goblet squats, use four sets of eight when the available load is lighter. Stop with a little left. Do not copy the bar weight onto a dumbbell.
- Leave next week aloneLog the movement you actually did. The original squat can return the next time a rack is free. The week does not restart because Tuesday used a goblet squat.
Where this answer changes
- A planned back squat test or a competition block is specific. An alternative keeps the legs working but it is not the test.
- Do not build a makeshift rack or dump a bar into an unsafe start just to keep the original lift.
- If the substitute causes sharp pain or you cannot control the descent, stop and choose a simpler stance or a machine.

How Aion handles this decision
Aion treats a taken rack as an exercise swap on that slot. The preferred squat replacements are a goblet squat, then a front squat, then lunges. The week is not rebuilt. The original squat can return when the rack does.
